Typical Power Bait Rig

Typical Power Bait Rig

Berkley’s Powerbait has proven to be an extremely effective fishing bait for Trout and even Steelhead. Most fishermen use a plunking method, rigging it with a sliding sinker and fishing it off the bottom. Since the bait floats, it will be able to rise above weeds and structure. Then you sit and wait for the fish to bite. BORING!

The new technique:

  • Trolling trout
  • Line sinker
  • treble hooks

Here is a new trick for you shore fishermen. Trolling trout. It can be rigged the same way, but don’t let it hit the bottom. Start to reel it back in SLOWLY. You will cover more water. Trout are attracted to movement and that great power bait scent is a killer combination.

If you are in a boat, tie on a treble hook and add some weight. You will need to troll SLOWLY. Check the bait every 5-10 minuets. Trout will seldom attack a bare hook

The line sinker you choose will determine water disturbance while reeling and speed of depth. In line bullet sinkers disturb the least amount of water, but are not easily changed. I like using large split shot.

Treble hooks will help keep the bait on. The trout will often swallow the hook. to release the fish unharmed, simply cut the line and toss it back in. The hook will dissolve in about a week or so. If you pull the hook out, you will kill the trout, so you must keep it.
